THUSANO PREVENTION PROGRAMME

TOGETHER WE CAN!

Thusano Prevention Programme was established in response to the increased number of learners dropping out of school in Maboloka village due to lack of parental care and poverty.
The programme started with only 6 orphans and vulnerable children identified through one local school. The 6 beneficiaries were assisted with school uniform, food parcels, stationery, clothing and after care services from their homes. The donations were offered by the local churches, individuals and business people.
After its registration, the programme expanded its services to a drop-in and information centre offering homework assistance, reading, indigenous games, sports and recreation, counselling, a meal, outreach to schools and households as well as holiday programmes.
Also addressing capacity building needs of families, linking them with poverty alleviating programmes. The programme intervention has reduced the number of children committing crime, abusing drugs, childhood pregnancy and HIV/AIDS infections.
Currently the programme is serving 110 orphans and vulnerable children and families affected by HIV and poverty at the drop-in centre. The affected adults are served with nutritious meal while empowered and supported to form co-operatives and sustain themselves.
